The player has been nursing a thigh injury for the last two months, but he hopes to be playing again in a few weeks.

Walsh made over 100 appearances for United between 1995 and 1998, was rarely injured and proved a consistent performer at Glanford Park before his £100,000 move to Vale Park.

He has endured more than his fair share of injuries whilst with the Valiants, nevertheless Walsh played 22 out of 33 games last season after returning from a career-threatening spine injury in October.

But the 28-year-old's progress was halted at the start of pre-season when he picked up the thigh strain while swimming, and some Port Vale fans have doubted whether he will ever get over his injury problems.

Walsh told the Sentinel: "I have heard that and it does get you down, but there is nothing I can do.

"I trained hard all through the summer and was feeling as fit as I have done for a long while. It is unbelievably frustrating."
