In a statement released within the last ten minutes it has been confirmed that Wharton offered his resignation as chairman, but after consulting with the board will stay on temporarily.

The statement is copied in full below.

Mr. Wharton offered his resignation as Chairman at a board meeting today, after considerable discussion Mr. Wharton kindly agreed to stay on temporarily to take the club through the difficult coming months of major disruption to the finances of Football League clubs.

The other Directors wholeheartedly thanked Mr. Wharton for all his endeavours on behalf of the club and are highly delighted that he is staying on for a short time.

The finance situation the statement refers to is the ITV Digital crisis, though sources have suggested to us that there will some developments on that front at the end of the week.
