Worst performance of the season

Bristol City's defeat at Millwall handed United the title, but the display against the 10 men of the Seasiders left celebrations a little flat.

"I am somewhat gutted. That was our poorest performance of the season and I felt sorry for the 1,800 fans who had come here to celebrate," said Adkins.

"However, they can look back on a season of consistency and great dedication by these players.

"We are not the most fashionable of clubs but we have proved a lot of people wrong."

United have lost just seven times in the league this season - but Blackpool continued their role as the Iron's bogey team by completing the double over them.

Remarkably, they did so despite being reduced to 10 men on both occasions, twice running out 3-1 winners.

Blackpool are guaranteed a play-off spot, and still have an outside chance of pipping Bristol City and Nottingham Forest to the second automatic promotion spot.

And manager Simon Grayson praised his players' attitude on a day the footballing community paid respect to their former player Alan Ball with minutes of applause at games all over the country.

"There was a lot of emotion around the ground because of Alan Ball's death - this is the club where he started his career and the club he played for when he won the World Cup," said Grayson.

"My players had to go out there focused despite all that ,and they did so and achieved perhaps the most polished performance of the season.

"We scored three and had two disallowed and had numerous chances, such was our superiority."
