Brentford sack manager Fitzgerald

The Bees' 3-1 defeat at Crewe on Monday condemned them to the drop after a season mostly spent a the foot of the table.

Fitzgerald started the season as youth team coach at Griffin Park, but stepped up to become manager a when Leroy Rosenior was sacked.

Barry Quin, Rosenior's replacement as head of youth development, will take over first-team duties until the end of the season.

"The best thing we can say about this season is it is now effectively over and we are sorry it has been such a disaster," said Brentford chairman Greg Dyke.

"The entire focus now is to rebuild for next season, thus giving us the best opportunity to bounce straight back into League One.

"It is encouraging all four clubs relegated from League One last season are contenders for promotion this year, hopefully we can match their performance next season."
