Brian Tinnion's side hope to boost their strikeline even further with the addition of the 23-year-old striker.

Due to his age Torquay will require compensation, in some sections of the media the Gulls were rumoured to have demanded £300,000 for the tricky forward, who fired in sixteen goals last season as they were relegated from League One.

But such a high figure for a striker who has only been at Plainmoor for a year is unlikely.

Torquay boss Leroy Rosenior said: "They are welcome to speak to him, I just want this matter closing one way or the other."

Gulls Chairman Mike Bateson added: "I hope they don't have as much trouble making contact as we've had!"

Akinfenwa has previously had spells at Boston United, Rushden and Dimaonds, Leyton Orient and Doncaster Rovers.
