The 32-year-old moved to Ninian Park this summer after being released by Liverpool.

But the injury - suffered in a pre-season game against FC Twente - is threatening to rule the former England striker out of Saturday's season opener against Stoke City.

"Bristol City sign a 31-year-old striker (Lee Trundle) for £1million (from Swansea) and we are told it is a fantastic bit of business - but we sign a lad who is a year older and who isn't bad at scoring goals, and there is a question mark over it, I find that unbelievable," said Jones.

Jones has also secured former England winger Trevor Sinclair, Scotland midfielder Gavin Rae and former Scunthorpe striker Steve MacLean this summer.
