Coventry beat Barnsley 2-0 at Oakwell thanks to goals from Leon Best and Clinton Morrison.

Swansea, meanwhile, were comfortably beaten 3-0 at the Liberty Stadium by Middlesbrough.

Adam Johnson fired Boro ahead before goals from Marvin Emnes and Tuncay secured a first league success on the road in nine months for Gareth Southgate's men.

Bristol City beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Ashton Gate in a match that will be remembered more for the decision by referee Rob Shoebridge that a shot from Freddie Sears did not cross the line.

The strike, which finished off a quick counter-attack, appeared to have crossed the line before being scrambled away by the home defence.

Neil Warnock, the Palace manager who is never afraid of courting controversy, argued  with the fourth official went on for several more minutes and at half-time the teams were led off separately to avoid a further flashpoint.

His mood darkened further a minute from time when a mistake by defender Jose Miguel Fonte handed Nicky Maynard the gift of a winning goal.

The Palace manager was on the pitch at the whistle encouraging a jubilant home crowd to applaud Shoebridge - which they duly did.

Jamie Ward and Ched Evans struck as Sheffield United bounced back from their embarrassing Carling Cup defeat against lowly Port Vale in midweek to record a 2-0 victory at Watford.

Craig Mackail-Smith powered Peterborough United to their first Championship point at London Road after Sheffield Wednesday looked set to hang on to the advantage of a goal by James O'Connor.

West Bromwich Albion claimed a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground as a cruel Chris Cohen own goal summed up the home side's luck on an afternoon when they dominated for long periods. Robert Earnshaw missed a penalty kick that would have earned Forest a point.

Shola Ameobi was the toast of Tyneside after hitting a superb hat-trick as Newcastle United's first home game outside the top-flight for 16 years ended in a crushing 3-0 win over Reading.

Plymouth Argyle were held to a 1-1 home draw by Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster and Preston and Blackpool and Cardiff also played out stalemates to the same scoreline.

Ipswich Town and Leicester City played out a goalless draw at Portman Road.
