He said: "We are looking for that extra quality we need to make and score goals. I don't think we are that far off.
"We are constantly looking for players to improve us and we are looking for that striker who is available.
"If we get someone in then he would have to be better than what we have already got, but it isn't straightforward because everyone is looking for good strikers."
Crewe visit Glanford Park on Saturday August 12, the first time the two sides have met for 12 seasons.
