During a loan spell at the U's towards the end of last season, Roberts experienced relegation to the Conference, but the ex-Norwich forward regained his love for the game whilst at the Abbey Stadium.

Roberts said: "I had a tough time at Gillingham and lost a lot of enthusiasm but I got it back when I came to Cambridge.

"My agent is going to give the new manager a ring this week to see what's going to happen.

"Should [Cambridge boss] Rob Newman want me and if there's nothing at Gillingham, I'd be interested.

"I suppose a lot depends on the club's finances but while I'd like to do coaching, I want to play on.

"It will be a challenge for Rob next season and if I was there to help him, it would be a challenge for both of us. We've got plenty of contacts, so I'm sure we could get help from a number of people."
