And when Leicester returned to the City Ground, the decided to thank the hosts by allowing them to score unopposed from kick-off.
As a result, Forest keeper Paul Smith dribbled the ball from the half-way line, before opening the scoring with just 23 seconds on the clock.
"It was an honourable gesture and I would like to think that football in general has come out of the game as the winner," said Calderwood.
"I think the crowd took it in the spirit it was intended."
Despite the head start, Forest ended up losing the game 3-2.
"I'm proud of the players and happy we did it," said Leicester chairman Milan Mandaric.
"The idea came from the whole club - we all like to win games but morality and fairness is also important. It was a difficult situation, but it was the right thing to do."
