The Aston Villa striker had been linked with a move to the Toon during the summer transfer window before a foot injury scuppered the deal.
The former West Ham United striker is now believed to be on the verge of joining the Magpies on loan.
"I believe we are close to agreeing everything and hopefully the move can be finalised later this week," said his agent Phil Sproson.
"Talks are ongoing between both clubs and I think they are keen to get it resolved. Marlon is back to fitness now and he is ready and raring to go."
The Swansea City midfielder Shaun MacDonald has joined Yeovil Town on a three-month loan deal.
