The Premier League side Fulham made an offer to loan Palace's Julian Speroni, as they found themselves braced to lose Mark Schwarzer to Arsenal. That move failed to materialise, so Speroni will stay at Selhurst Park.

"There was an interest but nothing materialised. We've managed to keep hold of Julian, certainly until January at least," the Eagles manager George Burley told the South London Press

"He has proven himself to be a fantastic keeper over a number of years and I'm very pleased he's still at the club."

Burnley turned down a bid for defender Andre Bikey on transfer deadline day, saying the interest was from a "major European club".

"We are not a football club that's going to hide things and I think it's important everybody realises we want to keep our best players," said the Clarets manager Brian Laws.

"Andre has had a fantastic start to the season and with him in the defence you feel assured and feel that we are going in the right direction."If we want to get out of this division we want to keep players like him. He's our man and we want to keep him here. So that was a quick two-minute call."

Derby County have opened contract talks with winger Kris Commons, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Scott Loach, the Watford keeper, is expected to be named on the bench when England take on Bulgaria in a European Championship qualifier at Wembley on Friday night.

The Doncaster Rovers defender Wayne Thomas a broken a knee in training.
"The surgeon is pondering what we can and can't do. It may be something that we can just leave but there is no pre-determined diagnosis for it," said the Rovers coach Sean O'Driscoll.
