Peterborough United have turned down three bids for striker Craig Mackail-Smith,, with director of football Barry Fry saying he is key to the side’s hopes of avoiding relegation from the Championship.

Posh are bottom of the table and 10 points away from safety with just 13 games left to play, but would not let their best forward leave despite Leicester City, Reading and Watford wanting to take him on loan until the end of the season.

“The chairman believes in the great escape. He believes we have a genuine chance of achieving the impossible and wants to try and keep the players at the football club,” Fry said.

"We have therefore turned down offers from three Championship clubs to take Craig on loan."
