Slade, 48, had been in charge at Huish Park since June 2006 when he quit Grimsby Town but his relaitonship with the club's chairman John Fry became strained over money available to spend on players.

Slade led the Glovers to the League One play-off final in his first season in charge, but they had found themselves at the wrong end of the table this season.

Three successive wins, including an impressive 3-1 victory at Peterborough United on Saturday, had seen Yeovil climb away from danger.

Steve Thompson, the club's assistant manager, will take charge of Tuesday's trip to Bristol Rovers.
