Lundekvam, 34, underwent successful surgery last week and has accepted the road back to recovery will be a long one.
The Norwegian defender was stretchered off in the final league game of last season, but was expected to return at the start of the current campaign following a summer of rest.
"The first thing is to get the tendon strong enough to support the stress of playing and then after a month or so I will see how it feels," he said.
"The surgeon said it would have needed doing at some point whatever and I do have to consider living a normal life after football.
"But the good thing is it has been done and mended and now I just have to be patient while it heals and then work hard to get back."
