The 20-year-old was rated as one of the hottest prospects outside of the top flight and Wigan boss Paul Jewell is delighted to get his man.

"Ryan is a cracking young prospect and he's an important addition to the squad," said Jewell.

"I've been keeping tabs on him for some time now and his performances for Tranmere last season were first class and I have no doubt he will excel at the top level."

The defender excelled as Tranmere reached the play-offs and is delighted to get a chance in the top flight.

Taylor said: "This move is a dream come true for me and I intend to make a big impression here at Wigan," he told the club's website.

"Obviously it's a wrench to leave Tranmere having started my career there. Everyone at Rovers has been brilliant to me and I wish them and Brian Little all the best for the future, they deserve success there.
