United’s trip to Middlesbrough does not look to be in doubt as the Riverside Stadium has undersoil heating.

The temperature at Middlesbrough is expected to drop as low as -3c on Christmas Day, according to the Met Office, but should be above freezing on Boxing Day. Further frost is forecast.

There are no severe weather warnings in England for Boxing Day although the Met Office have warned of poor conditions in North Lincolnshire and Yorkshire on Christmas Day – when the Iron’s first-team players are expected to travel up the A1 ahead of the game.

The roads should be marginally clear for Iron supporters as the race meeting due to be held at Sedgefield – about 12 miles away from Middlesbrough - on Boxing Day was called off due to a frozen track.

The League One game between Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers has been called off, as has the League Two match between Bury and Bradford City.

Few matches in Scotland, where temperatures dropped as far a -15c on Wednesday night, are expected to be played outside the Scottish Premier League.
