Wigan's Breckin set for Forest

The 29-year-old former Chesterfield defender was an integral part of Wigan's promotion side last season, but is thought to be surplus to requirements as Latics boss Paul Jewell tries to add proven Premiership class to his side.

Former Wigan team-mate Nicky Eaden also joined Forest last week, and Breckin is expected to follow suit.

Wigan boss Jewell said: "Nottingham Forest have made a bid for Brecks and we've allowed him to talk to them.

"I'm not sure what Ian is going to do at this stage, but he's reported back for pre-season training with the rest of the squad and has been working hard.

"Forest have made him an offer and he's thinking about it. Regardless of what Brecks decides to do, I'm looking to bring in one, if not two new centre halves to the club anyway.

"Pace at the back is an area we need to improve on for the Premiership season and I'm looking to improve that."

Forest boss Gary Megson has already snapped up Eaden, winger Nicky Southall and midfielder Gary Holt.
