The former England B international managed just 10 first-team games for the League Two strugglers.
He has suffered with a back injury, and is expected to concentrate on his TV work.
"He has been a model professional and everyone at the club wishes Peter well," a club statement read.
The 40-year-old, who will turn 41 next week, spent five seasons at Glanford Park before joining their rivals down the A180.
