Andy Butler, the former Scunthorpe defender, has signed for the League One side Walsall until the end of the season.
The centre-back, 27, was a free agent after being agreeing to leave Huddersfield Town a year before his contract finished.
Butler had moved to the Terriers in 2008 after turning down a contract extension at Glanford Park.
He had made 134 appearances for the Iron after turning professional in 2002, scoring 15 goals.
"Andy has a good pedigree. He is an experienced lad and an organiser who does what he does well," said Chris Hutchings, the Walsall manager.
"He's got the leadership qualities that we are looking for and is not afraid to get stuck in. He's got a good left foot and is strong in the air.
"He will add a lot to our defensive options and I am delighted to have him on board."
