Clemence diagnosed with cancer

Last updated : 02 February 2005 By Luke Thornhill
Clemence will miss England's training sessions next week before their friendly against Holland at Villa Park as he takes a break from work to receive treatment.

He said: "The news I have had from the doctors so far has been very positive and encouraging.

"I'm looking forward to getting the treatment out of the way and returning to work as soon as possible.

Clemence - who won 61 England caps, as well as three European Cups and five titles with Liverpool in an impressive playing career - has been the national team's senior goalkeeping coach since 1996.

He joined the Anfield side from Scunthorpe in 1967, with Bill Shankly paying United £18,000 for his services.
