No Crewe deal for Walsh

The 29-year-old is a free agent after being released by Port Vale this summer and is desperate to stay in the midlands area.

But a return to the Railywaymen, who he had a spell training with last summer, has been ruled out by manager Dario Gradi.

"We always try to help players as much as we can but we cannot extend a welcome to someone like Michael again," said Gradi.

"He came to us last summer, used our facilities to get himself fit and then went back to the Vale.

"I know he is friends with our physio, Matt Ratcliffe, and if Matt wants to help him then he is free to do that in his own time."

Walsh moved to Port Vale from Glanford Park in 1998, with a tribunal setting the fee at £175,000.

And the player is willing to turn his back on football for good rather than uproot his young family.

"I have to look to the future, and that could mean going to college or a plumbing course because I want something good financially," he said.

"I've never done anything like plumbing before, but it's one of those jobs people need."
