The Irvine-born player made six appearances for United, and featured just once for the Gers - that came in 2002.
Brighton said: "I was full-time at Rangers for four or five years and enjoyed every minute, but I have seen a lot of good players move on and do well elsewhere so hopefully I can so the same.
"I will miss the club but I have been well looked after at Murray Park and I have benefited from excellent coaching.
"I don't have any regrets, I am just looking to the future now.
"I don't have anything sorted out jut yet, but a number of clubs have watched me on international duty and that puts me in the shop window.
"With my family being in Scotland it would be nice to play at home but I wouldn't have a problem going down south. I was at Scunthorpe on loan last year and enjoyed the experience."
