Stanton has been on trial with Dale, and accepted terms despite picking up a knock playing in a pre-season friendly.

The 25-year-old left Glanford Park in the summer after an injury-ravished final two seasons at the club.

Dale manager Steve Parkin said: "I tried to get him last season and I think he will be a good signing for us.

"He is a player who will bring pace to our backline, something we didn't have last season.

"Nathan is an out and out defender, he won't pick the ball up and spray it out to the wings. His strengths lie in his pace and the ability to see danger and I'm sure we will be a better defensive unit this season."
