The likeable winger joined the Cumbrians in January 2008 for £75,000 from United, and won five player of the season awards this season at Brunton Park.

United manager Greg Abbott told the Carlisle United official website: "It came as a big shock for me.

"It is for personal reasons and Cleveland has asked for them to remain private just for the moment."

He admitted that he accepted the request with reluctance and confirmed that Taylor's name will be circulated to Football League clubs to inform them of his availability.

Carlisle have expressed their wish to recoup the £75,000 they paid for him before allowing him to move on.

Meanwhile former Scunthorpe target Danny Graham has also expressed his wish to leave Carlisle, who anticipate the compensation fee to be decided by tribunal if a club comes in for him.
