Cambridge were denied springing their second shock win of the week when they were held to a 1-1 draw by promotion chasing Scunthorpe United at the Abbey Stadium.

The U's raced into a 14th minute lead against the fourth placed Iron following on from a midweek victory over third in the table Bournemouth.

Dave Kitson latched on to a pass from Omer Riza and side footed his 24th goal of the season.

They were the better side during the first half and had two excellent chances to take what might have been a decisive 2-0 lead.

But Scunthorpe held on until they managed to force an equaliser midway through the second half when Paul Hayes worked a clever one-two with Paul Dalglish before firing the ball into the back of the net.

Seven minutes after equalising Iron goalkeeper Tom Evans pulled off a great one handed save to deny Luke Guttridge from putting the U's back in front.

The visitors then used their experience to get a point which was of much more use to them than the home team.

Both sides did go for the win but neither managed to carve out a clear chance in the last quarter of an hour.
