Orient substitute Jabo Ibehre smashed home an equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time to earn his side a precious point.

United had looked set to record their third successive away win after Richard Kell had fired them ahead a minute before the break.

But in a drama-drenched ending Orient defender Billy Jones saw a penalty saved five minutes from time and Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws was sent to the stand by referee Steve Tomlin before Orient's last gasp leveller.

By that time the Scunthorpe boss was watching the game in the stand after referee Tomlin finally awarded Orient a penalty after several earlier claims, five minutes from time.

The home side looked to have a better case when Tomlin turned down their spot-kick appeal on the hour when defender Jamie McCombe looked to have tripped Alan McCormack in full flight.

Tomlin eventually pointed to the spot when Nathan Stanton was adjudged to have handled substitute Boniek Forbes' shot from close range.

Scunthorpe keeper Sam Russell looked to be the hero when he saved Jones' effort and by that time the visitors should have had the game won.

Kell fired home the opener from 20 yards after good work by Steven McLean and in the second half Stanton hit the bar and McLean had a shot blocked by O's keeper Lee Harrison who also tipped an effort from substitute Paul Hayes over the bar, before Ibehre's last gasp leveller.
