The game was only six minutes old when the home side struck.

A long ball was played into the area, Mark Warren failed to deal with it and Steven MacLean lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan.

A few minutes later, the Shrimpers keeper was pleased to tip a shot from Matt Sparrow round the post.

Southend had the ball in the net just after the half-hour, Leon Cort headed home but he was penalised for pushing.

Scunthorpe were more positive after the restart and they might have added a second in the 56th minute, when Steve Torpey crashed a header against the bar.

Cliff Byrne then sent MacLean racing through but a fine recovery tackle by Warren denied him; and then Cort came to Southend's rescue as MacLean broke through again.

Sparrow then carved out another chance for MacLean but his finishing left something to be desired.

This proved fatal for Scunthorpe as the visitors hit back with an equaliser in the 69th minute when Leon Constantine found space to crash home a 20-yard drive.

Scunthorpe could take little comfort from this game but certainly teenager Andy Butler showed great promise and alongside skipper Byrne they were the key men in an off-key Scunthorpe performance.

Iron lineup: Russell, Byrne, McCombe, Stanton, Kell, Beagrie, Sparrow, Sharp, Butler, MacLean, Torpey.
