Frightening display of ambition

Echoes of the April Fools Day Lincoln merger gag rattled around my head when I logged on to Iron-Bru to see that Lawsy had not only ridded himself of the scourge of Ginge, but also brought in a bright, young proven goal scorer, all in the space of a week.

Surely this can't have happened, surely Sheldon will still be flying up the wing (in the way that headless chickens ‘fly') come August. Surely Beags will be joined by Stuart McCall, Mark Hughes, Nat Lofthouse and any other elderly, once decent player who is a bit bored of a Saturday afternoon.

But, no, in what has become a rarity since that golden day, three years ago this week, I have to applaud Mr. Laws, it really is a frightening, but pleasing, display of ambition by the Iron. Whether Ee-Aw will be dropped is another matter.

I am harsh to Mr. Torpey, I really want him to do well, I want him to get near to his potential and I'll support him during the 90 minutes on the pitch, but even he must admit that he struggles, even he must welcome healthy competition and even he must be bemused as to why he is never substituted.

So, a warm welcome to Paul Wheatcroft, and here's to a productive partnership with Carruthers whilst Torpey is suspended, oh, and no breaking metatarsal bones as I hear is the fashion nowadays. I guess that after this positive week, Lawsy will do a Byers/Moore and bury the bad news that we've signed up Carlton Palmer, whilst we're all watching the World Cup.

I'm off to check the calendar to make sure it isn't April, and find out if anyone has heard of a Late May Fools Day.

Up the Iron. (and England).
