Adkins was favourite with the bookies to take over from Stan Ternent who was relieved from his post earlier this week.

But the Iron boss has moved to deny the claims suggesting he is looking forward to his next game in charge of United: "I can control the controllables but I cannot control speculation and speculation is all this is" he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"I am just trying to focus on what will be a difficult FA Cup tie at Walsall on Saturday and looking forward to what will be my 100th game in charge of this club."
