Sam Togwell and Ian Morris scored in a 2-1 victory over the League Two strugglers, who belied their slump in form - they are still without a victory this season - with a determined display as their new manager Mike Newell watched from the stands before taking up the position on Wednesday.

"I have not seen Grimsby play this season but I would think this was probably one of their best displays," said Adkins.

"It was always going to be like that and we had to be ready and prepared for it, and I think we were.

"It was just about getting through the tie - and that is exactly what we have done. Our objective was to reach the next round and that is what we have done.

"We showed great character. This was always going to be the banana skin that everybody talked about."
