Adkins unhappy with 'Sunday league' defending

United's 3-3 draw with Swindon Town at Glanford Park was enough to move them a point clear at the top of League One, but they could have been further ahead of second-placed Leeds had they defended better.

Joe Murphy has now seen six goals go past him in two games, a tally that is too high for a side with aspirations of automatic promotion.

And although Adkins was pleased to avoid defeat after the 3-0 reverse at Oldham in midweek, knows his team needs to stop the leaks soon.

"We haven't been beaten, and that is what good teams do - they don't lose matches consecutively," he said.

"We created so many opportunities, but we have to get the balance right. We are scoring goals, but we've got to defend well as a cohesive unit.

"We want to get promoted, but you can't get away with conceding eight goals in the last three games.

"Again, we've gone in front in a game, and a Sunday league team wouldn't have given away the second goal we did. We gave them a lifeline, and you can't do that. It was poor defending, and we did look very vulnerable."

Maurice Malpas, the Swindon Town boss, said the point shows his side have overcome their early season struggles.

"If you score three goals away from home you may expect to win. Scunthorpe scored some decent goals but to our credit we looked a threat at the other end and it evened things up," he said.

"The belief in the team is there. We have had a few good results at home and we showed what we can do again away from home."
