MacLean scored 25 times while on loan at Glanford Park last season, and had hoped to force his way into the first team picture with the Gers in the coming campaign.

But the 21-year-old has been told he will not be given a chance with the Scottish giants, and he has been attracting the interest of several English league clubs.

Norwich City tried to sign him during the season, although he opted to stay with Scunthorpe, while Sheffield Wednesday had appeared front runners for his signature with a £100,000 bid.

But League One outfit Bristol City are the first club to have a bid accepted, but there is still time for Sheffield Wednesday to up their bid or Hull City to turn their expression of interest into a firm offer.
