The Clarets had an approach, believed to be £400,000, rejected out of hand last week but confirmed on Tuesday that they have put a second offer on the table.

"Suffice to say we've moved things on with different people. A couple of things have progressed," said the Burnley manager Owen Coyle.

"We've made an improved offer for Martin Paterson, and we await Scunthorpe's reply."
