The midfielder moved to Brunton Park on Tuesday, initially for a month although the stay is likely to be extended until the end of the season.

He goes straight into the Cumbrians' squad to face Northampton Town on Saturday. Abbott is short on options in midfielder as Graham Kavanagh has a hip injury and Paul Thirwell is also ruled out through injury.

Abbott suggested Morris could go straight into his starting line-up at the weekend.

"Ian has an energy and desire to play, I think he weill fit in to the way we like to do things in midfield nicely," he said.

"He likes to be involved and doesn't shy away from getting on the ball, that's exactly the kind of player we need in the squad at the moment."

Morris was not the only new arrival at Brunton Park on Thursday, the deadline day for "emergency loan" signings.

The left-back Ian Harte, a former Leeds United and Republic of Ireland player, also joined on loan from Blackpool until he end of the season.
