Match referee Scott Mathieson made the decision at 5.45 pm, because part of the pitch failed to thaw out.

A midday inspection by local Premier League referee Neale Barry had proved inconclusive.

Overnight temperatures dropped as low as - 4 C, but it has been well above freezing all day.

Both sides were willing to play the game tomorrow evening, but Carlisle manager Paul Simpson was unable to get in touch with his chairman John Courtenay to confirm the plan and was also concerned about his side being able to recover to travel to Torquay on Saturday.

Nationwide the football schedule has been hit by the cold, with ten games called off - including four in the Third Division.
