City expect to see off Iron in Carling Cup

Hughes is under pressure to lift some silverware this season as the club’s owners – the royal family of Abu Dhabi - look for returns on their investment. Victory over the Iron at the City of Manchester Stadium later this month would secure a quarter-final place: something Hughes is taking as read.

“We’ve got Scunthorpe in a couple of weeks, which will take us into the last eight of the competition,” he told The National, an Abu Dhabi-based newspaper.

“We have high hopes and are going to give it our best shot. I thought it was important to play strong teams in the early rounds and now we look like we can go close.

“If we can get the experience of winning a trophy it will help us as a team, because we’ll have an understanding of what it takes to win things.”

City spent around £100million on players over the summer, including Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez, Gareth Barry and Jolean Lescott.

That followed a substantial investment last season, when the signing of Robinho from Real Madrid showed the intent of the club’s new owners.

The Brazilian is expected to be able to return for City against the Iron as he recovers from an ankle injury.
