Barnsley have made no attempt to agree a fee with the Iron, and will pay whatever the Football League asks them to.

United are entitled to a fee due to Hayes being under the age of 24, and are hoping for a figure in excess of £100,000 for the striker who scored 20 goals last season in the Iron’s march to promotion.

"We have informed the Football League that Hayes has turned down the offer of a new contract here and signed for Barnsley," United's assistant club secretary Dave Beeby told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"We will wait for the League to set a date for the transfer tribunal.

"Obviously we would hope that a date will be set sooner rather than later, because whatever fee we get for Hayes could be used by the manager to strengthen the squad."

The tribunal is likely to set a figure which is based on future appearances for the Tykes, plus a sell-on clause.
