Two goals last night as the reserves beat Mansfield Town 4-1 helped convince Brian Laws to offer him the deal, after a fortnight on trial.

The 19-year-old forward began his career at Middlesbrough, despite being born in Sunderland, and was a prolific scorer in their schoolby sides.

Last season he played in seven games for their U19 side last season, scoring once, before injury ruled him out for seven months.

The previous season he had also been a regular in the U19 side, and made one appearance for their reserve side.

He was on trial with second division Mansfield Town earlier this season. but amove fell through as the Stags were unable to offer him a deal.

When we found out that Ryan was joining the Iron we contacted MFC1986, the leading Middlesbrough wesbite, for their views on the player.

"He is a `towering centre forward`," explained website editor Reggie, "and old fashioned target-man type of player."
