Pools will head to Glanford Park in the first round of the competition, with the game to be played in the week commencing August 13.

Both sides won promotion last season, Hartlepool finishing second in League Two and the Iron claiming the League One title, and will be looking to start the new term in similar form.

"It is a very tough draw," said Wilson, who played six games on loan for Scunthorpe in 1983.

"There will be two teams hoping to keep their promotion momentum going, and that will make it a tough game for both sides.

"The success that Scunthorpe had last year, particularly at home, will make it difficult for us."

Pools knocked Championship side Burnley out of the competition at the first round stage last season, and Wilson is conifdent his side will give a good account of themselves.

"We'll go into the game giving it everything, and hopefully put in a good display," he added.

"We went to Burnley and came away with a fantastic result, there's nothing to say we can't do that again."
