Hello Mr Lerner, welcome to English football...

American Randy Lerner took control of Aston Villa, and has flown in from the States to see the Carling Cup second round clash with Scunthorpe on Wednesday.

Villans boss Martin O'Neill, who was once turned down after applying to become Iron boss, said: "We are going to sit down on Thursday or Friday and Mr Lerner will outline what he has in mind for the club and hopefully he will listen to what I have to say about it myself.

"He is committed to putting things in place and it is that commitment which is great news for Aston Villa."

O'Neill, who took over at Villa Park in the summer, is keen to get the Lerner era off to a winning start.

The Premiership side are unbeaten under O'Neill's reign so far, and he is in no mood to let that record slip at Glanford Park on Wednesday night.

With national attention focused on the clash due to the presence of the television cameras, O'Neill - who won the trophy twice as a player at Nottingham Forest and twice as Leicester manager - is well aware of the pitfalls facing his side.

He added: "I would like to go with a fairly strong team, otherwise we could get turned over up there.

"If people come up and support the team, they will want us to play as strongly as we can.

"It is too important, as I have some good memories as a player and as a manager.

"They were good days and I certainly will not treat the competition lightly. I wouldn't want to."
