Despite the capture of Ireland U21 international Cliff Byrne this week the club are continuing talks with an unamed player.

Assistant manager Russ Wilcox said: "I don't want to reveal his name or position but the talks have gone well and maybe something will happen before the end of the week."

Wilcox has also denied the claim by Macclesfield manager David Moss that Carruthers has turned down the one year deal on offer from United, but has set a deadline of Friday for him to give his response.

Moss admitted an interest in the player last week, and was hoping to meet him this week to discuss a possible move to the Moss Rose.

United however are hoping to keep him at Glanford Park, even though he would have to accept a pay cut and settle for a supporting role to the first choice striking partnership of Steve Torpey and Paul Hayes.

Wilcox added: "I think from our point of view the main thing is that we get an answer either way by the end of the week.

"He has scored around 40 goals for us in the last two years and we want to keep him. We have done our homework in case he does leave, we have one or two players in mind but we would like Martin to stay."

The club did complete eight signings today though, as the eight YT players joining for next season put pen to paper.

Josh Lillis, Dean Twibey, Rob Fletcher, Andy Graham, Rob Smith, Jason Ford, Craig Mitchell and Shane Rose all formally agreed to join United.
