Iron linked with Nigeria international

Abbey is a free agent after being surprisingly released by League Two rivals Macclesfield Town in the summer.

The 26-year-old, who was an ever-present for the Super Eagles as they reached the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations earlier this year, is likely to sign a short-term contract as cover for the suspended Nathan Stanton.

Stanton must serve a three-match ban after being sent off in last week's top-of-the-table clash with Leyton Orient.

Abbey did enough with the Silkmen to attract attention from Premiership scouts, but his lack of consistency meant a big move away from Moss Rose never materialised.

He had been with the Cheshire club since 1999, when he arrived in London to study business studies and was taken north for a trial by his agent.

Last week he was on trial with Championship sid Gillingham, and could resurrect a move to them after a brief spell in North Lincolnshire.
