Iriekpen was jeered by fans after a string of poor performances and was stripped of captaincy earlier this month.

However, the former Swansea defender believes the press statement Scunthorpe United released was misleading, and insists that Adkins wanted to negotiate a new deal in the summer.

He told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "Manager Nigel Adkins asked my agent if I would consider a new contract this summer. I informed the club that I wanted to be put on the transfer list.

"Adkins agreed and it was my understanding, and intention, that we part on good terms. But Scunthorpe United have made that impossible by releasing a misleading press statement.

"Adkins never expressed dissatisfaction with my performance or leadership. In fact, last week, Adkins reiterated I was chosen to lead the club 'for a reason' and that I was respected in the locker room."

Iriekpen wished new captain Cliff Byrne "the best of luck" in his new role and is happy that he made a "substantial contribution" to the club.

It is likely that he will further his career with a move back to London, with Iron-Bru.net understanding that he is training with Millwall.
