Johnson has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Iron after joining on a free transfer from Sheffield United in the summer.

And Iron boss Brian Laws will not risk him on Saturday, prefering to save him for Wednesday's reserve game against Hull City.

Laws said: "Johnson is just about ready for a game, possibly Wednsday

"We've got good players in this squad, I don't want to force an issue that might pull him back."

United are unlikely to make any changes to the side which recorded a 2-1 win over Barnsley on Saturday.

Gillingham will also stick with the same side which started their opening two League fixtures.

They are missing goalkeeper Tony Bullock (sprained foot) and defender Tommy Williams (sprained ankle). Midfielder Daniel Spiller will continue to act as a makeshift striker after shaking off a knock picked up against Port Vale in midweek.

Gills boss Neale Cooper said: "Scunthorpe are a big, well organised side. It can be like the 'land of the giants', though they say that the bigger they are the harder they fall.

"Scunthorpe is a hard place to go, and they haven't been beaten at home in the last 10 games."
