The 25-year-old has been instrumental in United's promotion challenge this season, but is set to miss the start of next season after breaking the tibia and fibia bones in his left leg.

Specialist doctors at Bradford Royal Infirmary, however, say that the injury is not as bad as his last leg break.

He missed the entire 2002/03 season after breaking his leg in the 2001 Humber derby win over Hull.

He will have an operation on Tuesday, before beginning the rehabilitation progress.

His fiancee Antje posted on the Iron-Bru.net messageboard on Sunday, thanking fans for their support.

She said: "All he could ask in the ambulance was how the other fixtures had ended, I think that says it all.

"Thank you for all of your messages and support. I will pass them on to Richard."

And his mum Margaret told the Press Association: "They said if you were to break your leg it could not be a better break, if that makes any sense.

"Doctors have told him it won't be long before he's up and about, and he'll have an operation on Tuesday.

"Richard said himself it didn't feel nearly as bad as the last one, so he's keeping positive, he doesn't like a fuss. But for this to happen after all he's been through is heart-breaking.

"Fans have been sending goodwill messages, so I'd like to thank them all, they've been fantastic."
