United will host Tranmere Rovers, who were finalists as recently as 2000, at Glanford Park in the week beginning August 22.

Laws told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "It is a tough draw, but the one thing you ask for is to be at home.

"I know (Tranmere boss) Brian Little well and i will look forward to the game, which will be a good yardstick for us."

Tranmere assistant Richard Hill reckons the game will be good preparation for his side, who face the Iron twice in the League shortly afterwards.

He said: "We play them three times in pretty quick succession and it will be good for us to have a look at them.

"It would have been nice to have gone to some of the big teams in the Championship, but we've got to go to Scunthorpe - hopefully we can get a result and a good draw in the next round."
