The young centre-back headed home after 78 minutes, giving United a 1-0 win over Yeovil Town.

The three points catapulted the Iron two points clear of second-placed Leyton Orient and third-placed Swansea City.

A beaming Laws said: "Butler was awesome in the air, and though Yeovil caused us problems early on we made a change and that tightened things up

"The players are willing to work for each other and now, having gone back to the top a third of the way through the season, we feel confident.

"But we are not taking anything for granted, the gap is so small nobody is running away with anything.

"Our defence was very solid, there was some great football and some of the movement was excellent. We shut down their midfield engine room."

Glovers boss Gary Johnson was left rueing reffing decisions that he felt should have gone the other way.

He said: ''It was a good game of football, I was disappointed we didn't take one or two early chances, but luck is not with us at the moment.

"We must keep going and fighting. We thought Phil Jevons was onside with his strike, while Lee Johnson was adamant Scunthorpe's goal was not over the line."
