Despite dominating the match, a 70th minute equaliser from the Shrews threatened to see United left with just a point.

But a stunning strike from Paul Hayes a minute after conceding, and a late solo effort from Cleveland Taylor, secured the 3-1 win which moved the Iron five points clear at the top of the League Two table.

Laws said: "We had to be patient and did not panic, we did so much probing and had the majority of the possession.

"We are playing well at home, but taking nothing for granted and I'll be delighted if, when we reach our final game of the season, we are still five points clear.

"The turning point was the penalty, but we needed a kick up the backside to get us back into the game and did that with a magnificent strike from Paul Hayes."

Opposite number Gary Peters commented: "You find out more about players through disappointment than when things are good.

"I'm proud of my players who stuck together and worked magnificently.

"The penalty changed the course of the game, not many people saw the incident and my player says he didn't deserve to be sent off, but we kept it tight as long as possible."
