The ex-Halifax boss was at Friday night's 4-1 romp at Huddersfield doing media work and is hugely impressed by the manner in which United's young, injury-hit side have set the pace in League One.

The Iron's young trio of two-goal Andy Keogh, fellow striker Billy Sharp and defender Marcus Williams in particular were singled out for praise.

He told BBC Radio Humberside: "People say that you don't want to be top of the league too early, but that's rubbish for me - I mean, why not?

"The Scunthorpe lads have come out on top by far. The players deserve the standing ovation, I was so pleased with the overall performance.

"The young lads have all gained from this, they will gain in confidence and experience. It's a good win for Scunthorpe.

"I thought Keogh and Sharp would cause problems, I was intrigued by them. The fitness and pace levels were tremendous, it was a great result for Scunthorpe."

Lillis also tipped United's teenage left-back Marcus Williams to eventually make his mark in the Premiership:

He added: "He's got a cultured left foot, if he can get overlapping then he can go into the Premiership.

"He has that compusure to handle balls. In tight situations you look for players who can cope with it."
